5 Reasons Why You Must Visit Sun Peaks

Sun Peaks Ski Resort is in British Columbia in Canada, and is approximately four hours’ drive from Vancouver. However, it is only a 45 minute drive from the nearest airport which is at Kamloops.

Since Sun Peaks is so far inland it has snow which is light and dry: it’s called “champagne powder”. However, although it is a fair way from the coast, it is still near enough to get all the storms coming in off the Pacific Ocean so it receives a lot of snowfall. It also has more than its’ fair share of sun – more than any other resort in Canada: the clue is in the name. So there are two good reasons to visit Sun Peaks right away: plenty of snow – plenty of sun. What more could you ask for?

What About The Skiing?

After Whistler, Sun Peaks is the largest ski resort in Canada. There are 4270 acres of skiable terrain, 135 named runs, over 50 km of Nordic trails, and there is a 10 acre terrain park. On some of the Nordic trails you can take your dog with you if you wish. There are three mountains, all of which are accessible from the village, and the vertical drop is 882 metres. As all the runs lead to the village it makes skiing with the family that much easier, and if you have forgotten something it’s a simple matter to pop back to your hotel room, before you get on the lift.

The village itself is ski in/ski out and was named Best Ski In/Ski Out Village In Canada in 2009 by Ski Canada magazine.

What’s The Apres Ski Scene Like?

One of the top rated bars in Sun Peaks is Bottoms Bar & Grill which has a lively apres ski time, and offers a daily drinks special. It was awarded five stars by TripAdvisor.

Bento’s Day Lodge provides breakfast, lunch, and beer – cafeteria style – and is home to what it describes as its’ “world famous handmade gooey cinnamon buns”. It sells lift tickets and has storage and lockers for guests. You can take your own lunch if you wish, or you can let them spoil you with theirs. Free Wi-Fi included.

Morrissey’s is an Irish pub which has live sporting events showing every night.

Oya is a Japanese sushi restaurant which offers your favourite sushi roll, noodles, or anything else Japanese that you fancy. They have sake available as well.

Vertical Café has hot dogs, vegetarian chilli, wraps, fresh made paninis, quesadillas, smoothies, shakes, and speciality coffees. Breakfast is served all day, and soup is made freshly every morning.

The Steakhouse at Sun Peaks Lodge provides house cuts of 100% Canadian beef, barbecue ribs, seafood, and has a great wine list. Home-made pastries and fresh barista coffee to finish.

Is Sun Peaks An Expensive Resort Like Whistler?

Let’s be honest: any sort of ski holiday is not going to come under the heading of “cheap”!

However, compared with somewhere such as Whistler, Sun Peaks rates are considerably less. After accommodation, one of the biggest expenses of a ski holiday is the cost of lift tickets. You have to get up the mountain somehow, and unless you plan on walking you are going to have to pay for it. Compared to Whistler and some of the larger resorts in the northwest of the US, lift tickets at Sun Peaks are considerably more affordable.

Not only that, if you book your holiday early and book your lift tickets at the same time you can also get discounts on them. And don’t forget that kids under 12 ski free.

Do You Need A Family Friendly Resort?

If you are looking for a family friendly resort, then Sun Peaks will suit you to a “t”. Sundance Kids Centre is available to take care of kids from 18 months to 5 years and offers a range of exciting activities. There is also a brand new NHL size skating rink which has just been opened for the 2016/2017 winter season. It is located next door to the Sports Centre which is just a few minutes’ walk from the village. Furthermore, kids ski free when you buy a five day or more adult lift ticket.

There is a sports and aquatics centre and a sledding hill, and also spa services available all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

On Thursday evenings there is a Fondue Dinner & Evening Descent. First there is a dinner with live music at the Sunburst Mid Mountain Restaurant (everything in Sun Peaks seems to have the word “sun” in it) followed by a cruise down the five mile lantern lit ski run with your guide. The snow limo is available for those who need it. The Sun Peaks resort is the perfect destination for winter and the spring seasons for both snow and adventure holidays.

Anything Else I Should Know About Sun Peaks?

Yes. Compared to other resorts like Whistler or Banff, Sun Peaks is considerably less crowded. This is true even at peak times such as Christmas and the New Year. There is plenty of space on the slopes, and you don’t have to queue for the lifts – another very good reason to visit Sun Peaks.
